What’s Wogonin?
Wogonin is an O-methylated flavonoid, a flavonoid compound found in Scutellaria baicalensis.
Wogonin Sources
Wogonin is a kind of flavonoids, which exists in different plants, and the highest content of wogonin is extracted from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis.
Scutellaria baicalensis, also called Huang Qin, Baikal skullcap, Chinese skullcap, is a plant of scutellaria (Labiaceae), whose dry roots are recorded in Chinese pharmacopeia, Scutellaria baicalensis has been widely used by China, and its neighbors for thousands of years. It grows mainly in temperate and tropical mountainous areas, including China, East Siberia of Russia, Mongolia, Korea, Japan, etc.
Constituents of Scutellaria baicalensis
Scutellaria baicalensis, on the other hand, has been widely used as a medicinal plant in China for thousands of years. Preparations made from its roots are used to treat diarrhea, dysentery, hypertension, bleeding, insomnia, inflammation, and respiratory infections.
It is reported that flavonoids such as wogonin and baicalein extracted from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis have a variety of pharmacological functions, including liver protection, antibacterial, anti-viral, antioxidant, anti-convulsive, and neuroprotective effects.
Scutellaria baicalensis contains a variety of chemical components, such as various flavonoids, diterpenoids, polyphenols, amino acids, volatile oil, sterol, benzoic acid, and so on. The dry roots contain more than 110 kinds of flavonoids such as baicalin, baicalein, wogonoside, and wogonin, which are the main active ingredient of Scutellaria baicalensis. Standardized extract like 80%-90% HPLC Baicalin, 90%-98% HPLC Baicalein, 90%-95% HPLC Wogonoside, and 5%-98% HPLC Wogonin are all available from Cima Science.

Wogonoside
Wogonoside, also named Oroxindin, Glychionide B, is the main flavonoid component of Scutellaria root, which has anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, and chemotherapy activities.
Wogonin vs Wogonoside
Wogonoside, a bioactive flavonoid, is a glycoside formed by wogonin and glucuronic acid. It is extracted from Oroxylum Indicum, Bacopa Monnieri, and Holmskioldia sanguinea. It is one of the active ingredients in the Japanese herbal supplement Sho-Saiko-to.
Wogonin and Baicalein, Baicalin
Baicalein is a cell-permeable flavonoid originally isolated from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis. It is an effective anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor agent with anti-thrombotic, anti-proliferation, and anti-mitosis effects.
Baicalin, a metabolite of baicalin, has anti-viral activity against the dengue virus.
Wogonin is also extracted and isolated from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis. It is of special value in various therapies as it has adjuvant benefits in the treatment of viral infection, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotection, anti-anxiety, and anti-convulsion.
Wogonin Manufacturing Process
Wogonin was first isolated and identified from Scutellaria baicalensis in 1930. It can be found in different parts of Scutellaria baicalensis, such as root and whole grass, and in different plants, such as the leaves of Burm. F., stem drusus of affine hook. & Arn. Although the content of wogonin is the highest in Scutellaria baicalensis, the fact is that the yield is low and sometimes not enough to achieve industrial development.
Wogonin Benefits
Anti-inflammation
According to clinical applications, Scutellaria baicalensis has a wide range of anti-inflammatory effects. For inflammatory cells, wogonin induces apoptosis. Inflammation is related to the expression of various proteins, and wogonin can inhibit the expression of these proteins to achieve an anti-inflammatory effect. PPAR-γ and NF-κB signaling pathways are also involved in the occurrence of inflammation, and wogonin improves cell viability by inhibiting NF-κB, MAPK, and phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase signaling pathways. It can be seen that wogonin exerts its anti-inflammatory effect mainly by inhibiting the release of inflammatory factors and the expression of inflammation-related proteins.
Antioxidant
Scutellaria baicalensis has a strong antioxidant effect, which can indirectly exert a cytoprotective effect through antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity of the polyphenol mixture from the four tissues of Scutellaria baicalensis was remarkable. Among Scutellaria baicalensis plants, roots have the highest antioxidant activity, followed by leaves, stems, and flowers. Studies have shown that wogonin can inhibit FeSO4-Cys-induced lipid peroxidation in liver homogenate, and has a strong cytoprotective effect on H2O2-induced oxidative damage to human umbilical vein endothelial cells.
Wogonin dosage
There are no dietary supplements with this ingredient on the market, and you need to consult your health doctor for dosage.
