What is thymol?
Thymol is found in thyme oil, a natural monoterpenoid phenol derivative of p-Cymene, isomeric with carvacrol. Its structure is similar to carvol, and it has hydroxyl groups at different positions of the phenol ring, one of the most important dietary components in thyme species. Thymol powder was usually extracted from Thymus vulgaris (common thyme), ajwain, and various other plants as a white crystalline substance with a pleasant aromatic odor and strong antiseptic properties.
Thymol Natural Sources
Thyme is a medicinal plant with a variety of therapeutic properties. This plant, originating in the Mediterranean region, is usually used as a cooking herb with a long medicinal history. Thyme is one of the main components of thyme essential oil(Thymus vulgaris L., Lamiaceae), accounting for about 50%~75% according to the quality of different raw materials.
Of course, thyme can also be found in other plants, like Ocimum gratissimum、Origanum vulgare、Lippia multiflora、Centipeda minima、Satureja hortensis, and Nigella sativa seeds.
Thymol Powder Manufacturing Process
In the past, the commercial source of thymol was extracted from thyme. However, the low yield, high cost, and high environmental pressure of thymol removed led to the increased price of thyme, limiting commercial development and market space.
