D-(−)-Pantolactone is produced by condensation of isobutyraldehyde with formaldehyde to produce α,α-dimethyl-β-hydroxypropionaldehyde, which is further condensed and hydrolyzed, acidified and lactonized with the participation of calcium chloride.

It is used in the synthesis of calcium D-pantothenate, D-panthenol, Vitamin B5, or as other pharmaceutical intermediates.
